snake

So 2013 is the year of the snake-- in this case, a black water snake. I'm kind of fond of snakes, so long as they don't bite me-- they're so graceful and smooth.  None of the black snakes around us are venomous; mostly they keep down the rodent population and mind their own business. You don't often see them, unless they've found a good sunny rock to bask on.

But for a lot of people, snakes are the stuff of nightmares... and the year of the snake can be a difficult time. The most recent snake years brought u 9/11 and Tiananmen Square... which might lead a snake-phobe to worry that the coming year could be stormy.

But every year has its storms.
What do water and snakes have in common? They both flow.  And darkness on the deep doesn't mean you're going down-- sailors navigated by the stars. With any storm, whether you sink or ride it out depends largely on how you trim your sails.

This site recommends focus on discipline and attention to detail for those who want to make progress in creative work... sound advice, whatever year it is!

  • I didn't realize 9/11 and Tiananmen Square were both snake years!

Well, but in the Chinese system there are lots of good things associated with snakes, too---here's hoping for those associations to win out this time round!

(I love your snake: he is beautiful.)
    • Thanks! Yeah-- I don't know a lot about the symbolism, so went searching... I am not a terribly precise person, so the suggestion to use "more attention to fine detail" mostly sounded like every report card I got as a kid. :P (Hence my snake is sporting a jacket of clocks... so it goes!) I agree-- hope this is a year for the positives!
  • Beautiful Snake illustration!

    Hi, Liz!
Just wanted to say how great this is--
Have you done other years' animals before??
I was born in the year of the monkey, and with your love of the swirls and fibbonacci (sp) spirals, I thought it might be an interesting subject, between the tail and the ears...
Lemme know, just wanted to visit your site here--LOVE it, especially the Fridays!

    • Re: Beautiful Snake illustration!

Thanks, Liz!! I'm a monkey, too-- this is the first one I've done, but I will definitely be doing the others now-- very fun project! Glad you visited, and liked this site! :D
  • NICE!
  • I like the colours in this.

I don't believe in Chinese astrology. According to it, monkeys are incompatible with tigers, and that isn't true.
    • Yeah-- you'd have to believe everyone born in a certain year had the same personality, which never made sense to me, since I went to school with a whole bunch of monkeys, and we turned out to be pretty different people. They will put a finer point on it with distinctions between months too, and particular versions of particular years... for instance, I'm a fire-dog earth-monkey. Though I have absolutely no idea what that means. ;o)

      --- Exactly!
