Don't panic!

Here's one from a picture book I'm working on called "The Wiggle Jiggle Buzz and Scuttle Zoo," in which 26 alphabetically-appropriate children make up a zoo together.
So, for Q, we have:

Quentin brought a quiet, quiet snake. Maybe it was dead.

For U, we have:

Ursula brought some sea urchin spines. She picked them out of her foot all by herself last summer.
With tweezers.

This is a start on the page for H. I'm not sure whether I want to go for full-color realism, or do it more in cartoons. I'm leaning toward cartoons, though. Someone on SCBWI suggested that the combination might not be a bad idea. I'm really undecided.
I'm trying to get something together for the local conference, which is in November. More time would make for better results, but I'm running out.... Aargh.
I need to pick something and just do it, but I'm not sure what I want.
Anyone have any suggestions?

hamster Hank thought the gerbils would like to play with his hamster, but they didn't.

  • I'd go cartoonish, because the realistic hamster has me...panicked! Is he going to be okay? Somebody save him! Oh gosh darn it--I'll save him! Where is that boy? Hank? Hank! Oh there you are... Bad Hank! Bad, bad, really bad Hank! You are so very lucky that I'm not your mother! You know, you don't even deserve a hamster! That's right! Here's a five spot--I'm taking the hamster home with me! Grrr!

    Well, that was weird.
    • (snicker)
      Don't worry, he'll be OK.

I wish I could do stuff in a similar style to Click Clack Moo. I love the expressiveness, and the simple lines!

Well, who knows. I think I have to give it a try... what I'm really hoping is that someone will request the story, and pick someone better than me to do the art! But it would be a fun story to do, if I could get the kind of images I want!
    • I'd agree with cocoskeeper (even her little weird aside! :-0 ) about going more cartoonish. Also, maybe the gerbils should be more playful (planning to TP the hamster's house) than devious (planning to feed the hamster to the birds).
  • What do you mean, "Better than you?"

Looks to me like you can handle yourself just fine. :)
  • I love the idea, Liz. Especially the "Q". For some reason, I picture a little baby Quentin Tarantino. It's so apt. :)
  • Your zoo book sounds really fun Liz! And I like the hamster a lot - very cute, but frightened at the same time.

Are we supposed to pick between the hamster style and the gerbil style? I think the black and white would work for the gerbils since they are in the background, but I like the style of the hamster better. So I vote for the hamster style.
  • LOL- *Love* the dark humor :-D

I like the style of the hamster. He's fairly realistic, but his expression is cartoonish. It's a good blend!
  • Thanks, everyone! Looks like I went to bed too early-- I missed all the helpful comments!

Thanks for the "You can do it", Kelsey and Liz! And Kevin-- baby Tarantino!ROFL!

Minabirdwriter and Stephanie-- I'm thinking of going for something not quite as venomous and scribbly as the gerbils, but not quite as realistic as the hamster, since I think the realism fights too much with my capacity for making him expressive! Hopefully it will lean more towards the hamster end of the scale, stylistically. I haven't done much work in color cartoon, so I'm struggling.

The end result shouldn't be too scary, I hope-- more silly. Though the hamster should look scared...

Thanks to everyone!! I'll post an update, when I figure out how I want to do this....
  • Love this!
  • Your illustration reminds me of the time i decided to buy my gerbil a "friend". I thought she was lonely. *sigh* Was i ever wrong. They turned into a ball of furry death. I have a scar from the experience. They lived in separate cages for the rest of their lives.
    • Oh man. Trying it with gerbils would be scary! I did that with hamsters, and they just tried to kill each other, not me. I'd gotten them for one of those maze science projects at school... we did a project on animal behavior and friendship (or the lack thereof) instead. We even tried things like shampooing them both to remove the smell, but it didn't work. We also wound up with two sad little furry balls in separate aquariums...
